‘Do they ever relax at home?’

A good friend advised me not to read the online comments from the Sunday Times Style article as people might be less than complimentary.
We are both pretty thick skinned and obviously I ignored this advice and read them all, good and bad, with amusement.
One person asked if we ever relax at home which really did make me laugh because quite frankly, no, we don’t.
We bought our first flat in 2001, a one bed wreck, and armed with naivety, the Reader’s Digest DIY manual and much enthusiasm, we embarked on our first renovation.
16 years later, we took on the biggest project to date, our current home and the subject of last Sunday’s piece.
Not quite as naive, with YouTube instead of a book and still relatively enthusiastic, we threw ourselves at the challenge of renovating a home and starting 3 new businesses, pushing us to the limits of our energy and bank account on more than one occasion.
When I have felt despondent , Tom shouts ‘Forwards!’ his battle cry, to rally my mood. It usually works.
We have created a lifestyle that whilst not relaxing, has given us the opportunity to learn new skills, push way beyond our comfort zones and provide our family with some incredible memories.
We have decided that we have no idea how to relax and to be honest, it’s ok, that works for us. They’ll be time to relax when it’s all finished.

Detailing our journey from London to Broadstairs and the relentless DIY that we have embraced since starting our new life by the sea.

Written by the brilliant interior stylist @jenhaslamstylist and shot by the equally brilliant @kristy_noble, both of whom were an absolute joy to chat to, we reminisced on how we managed to renovate our home on a budget, buying vintage and second hand furniture to create a unique space.

We also talked about how starting this new chapter sowed the seeds for my business, Little Victory and how this has developed.

It feels pretty surreal to be sitting at home, reading all the messages of congratulations and also the online comments (That’s a post for another day) 😂

I will probably be banging on about this for a while, sorry. This is a big deal for us and I am excited about what the future holds for our life in this beautiful seaside town.

Slow process.
Somewhere along the way, I decided that working on very slow and meticulous projects was to be my go to.
Hand knitting, painstaking paintwork, patchwork, rag rugging and weaving, not one of these can be described as speedy.
Despite working for many years in the fashion industry where working at speed is the order of every minute of every day, I have chosen an alternative path where making something slowly and carefully, gives the most beautiful results.
At its heart, craft is not supposed to be fast, the idea and the process are entwined and at the heart of this, is time very well spent.

Up close and personal.
Each of my hand woven pieces are crafted using fine cotton thread for an ultra graphic and smooth finish.
From a distance, they appear to be painted but each thread is precisely wrapped and woven to achieve a fine textured palette of light altering colours.
